Miller Harris Étui Noir is a very pleasant leather fragrance. Opens very dark, with some tar and iris (giving an impression of a Fahrenheit-ish violet), and Givaudan's widely used rasperry/leather accord (AdP Leather, Rasasi La Yuqawan...). That said, it is better rounded and way more refined than other leather fragrances. The drydown is a combo of smoky birch tar and generic amber accord, and at that stage, it is shares strong similarities with Memo Irish Leather and Trudon Bruma. The smoke in Étui Noir is more bitter and wilder than the smoke in La Fumee. If La Fumee is a fireplace, then Étui Noir is a fire in the forest, above which sparks dance in the dark. As in La Fumee, a fresh elemi aroma with hints of tangerine and pine is added to the smoke. Sweet resins melt on the embers, making the smoke even more fragrant, yet it's impossible to tame it; it remains wild.

Smoke is, first and foremost, a source of safety, warmth, and comfort; it can also begorgeous, sweet, and meditative. Often, perfumers try to bring out the beauty of smoke by throwing as much incense as possible into the mix, but its coziness seems to be optional; sometimes, you will find both beauty and that special smoky comfort.Sweet, velvety amber, sweet viscous labdanum, and sweet, dry sandalwood are hidden beneath the smoke of La Fumee. The bitter and fresh smoke doesn't really let their sweetness shine through, but it's still there and makes the smoke feel especially pleasant. The smoke provideswarmth and light, and not the smoky smell of whiskey itself, as in my favorite Fumidus by Profumum Roma, but rather the oily, nutty, sweet-woody aroma of cognac. Noir is a scent that makes you feel instantly sexy. The scent is so magnetic, suddenly you are enveloped by an air of mysteriousness and sensuality. You know you will turn heads when you walk through a room. It makes me feel very Parisian when I wear it, like I have that enviable ‘je ne sais quoi’ that all Parisian women seem to have so effortlessly. It is a deep, intoxicating fragrance with notes of iris, patchouli and leather. Keep for yourself or share with your partner, there are no rules. You can lighten Étui Noir with Lumière Dorée giving it more a citrus/floral note. I would buy them as a duo and share and layer with your partner. Noir has no solid walls around it and breathing in its smoke, it becomes clear that outside the circle of light cast by the fire, the night is dark, filled with strange rustles and frightening secrets. It's better to sit closeto the fire and not think about why those plants rustled near the water: was it a light breeze or the icy fingers of a mermaid?

La Fumee was released in 2011 and was so successful that the house Miller Harris decided to continue the smoky theme. In 2012 came La Fumee Arabie and La Fumee Maroc, then in 2013 came La Fumee Ottoman, in 2014La Fumee Intense, and finally, in 2015, La Fumee Alexandrie. The smoky Miller Harris fragrances wereso good that I was overwhelmed; having everything was impossible, and choosing just one was really tough. By the time I finally decided I wanted the classic La Fumee, almost all of them had been discontinued.Etui Noir is an artisanal fragrance from Miller Harris and the ideal signature scent for a discerning woman. It was introduced to the world in 2016. This enduring parfum lasts all day long with just a few dabs due to its high proportion of scented oils. Most eaux de parfum have between 15-20%. Miller Harris pays homage to Lyn’s training in France with each of their fragrances titled in French. The leather donkeys breathe out antique quality discreetly, but the citric bergamot keeps the fragrance floating.

It opens with thetransparent bitter smell of smoke; pure smoke from burning wood -clean, light. But the sweetness of incense, the fresh and tart fragrance of elemi, the scent of cedar resin, and the floral smell of geranium, rosy and caustic, envelop the smoke so that the smoke becomes fragrant and sweet, almost like a hookah... Yet, the spicy sweetness of hookah doesn't reach a dessert-like effect because the smoke in it is too strong and obvious. La Fumee's smell of burning firewood, a fireplace, is actually more interesting than all the other notes. It's so simple and cozy!
