Because what I was thinking about Norma was indeed boring by our household's standards, according to which "divine" meant anything Mother had endorsed and "boring" everything else. But Monique was the kind of girl it's a pleasure to reassure about almost anything, and after half an hour of that heavy French public smooching we were both about as far away from a mother complex as anyone could get. W. It’s classic counter-espionage intrigue when a missile launch is sabotaged at Woomera, an American astronaut is kidnapped on the Gold Coast and a young man is brainwashed into becoming an assassin. Lent gravitas by Robert Powell’s narration, unlike many of its contemporaries Great Crimes and Trials… could hardly be said to sensationalise the events on which it focuses. But even legends, when they get to be a little too legendary, don't necessarily find lovely six-million-dollar spectacles growing on avocado trees.

The show was initially produced by Granada Television for the ITV network and ran for five series between 1991 and 1996; Introduced by Edward Woodward. Long after I'd forgotten it, Monique still remembered she was living with one of those European-type dragon aunts who sit up clanking keys until their nieces come home as unblemished as they went out. When Richard Dacre wanted to go up to that ledge to film it for his locations featurette, the present owners of the building wouldn't let him, saying it was too dangerous.

In almost all cases, the half hour format of the programme constrains the subject: in each episode, the programme makes an attempt to establish some form of context for the crimes it discusses (for example, by providing a brief discussion of social trends in the 1920s, in the case of the episode focusing on Leopold and Loeb) before discussing the crimes that are its focus. The opening credits are great, the scenes in the crypt are genuinely scary, the music as mentioned is excellent. When a rocket scientist dies under suspicious circumstances, Australia’s highly secret government organisation C. However, true crime programming has often attracted criticism: Deborah Jermyn notes that the programmes have been claimed to contribute ‘to rising fears about crime’ and adds that in the wake of criticisms that took place in the late 1980s and early 1990s, ‘some of the shows were quietly withdrawn’ (op cit. Got a feeling I'm going to really like this series (having remembered seeing just the one edition shown on ITV late at night), and seeing Edward Woodward on screen again was very welcome. When insurance agent Bud Cooper (Isaac) turns up asking questions about the suspicious circumstances of the break-in however, both Gardner and Margaret are suspected of having a part to play in her death.
