Photos found under rubble put on display in Iwate
In one of the towns devastated by the March 11th tsunami, photographs found in the debris are being displayed so that they can be returned to their owners.
Self-Defense Forces personnel and firefighters have recovered more than 1,000 photo albums from collapsed houses in Otsuchi Town, Iwate Prefecture, during their search operations.
The items were handed over to NPOs and volunteers who cleaned them and put them on display in a temporary town hall on Sunday.
Many of the pictures are of children or were taken at weddings or other ceremonies.
Many visitors were seen checking the photos and albums one by one, in the hope of finding any photos showing important moments for their families.
A woman said that she is very happy to have found photos of her 2 daughters dressed for a children's ceremony. She smiled, saying that even though her home was swept away by the tsunami, the photos have given her some encouragement.
A woman who returned to the town to see the display said in tears that she appreciates people who have recovered pictures of her family taken more than 30 years ago.
Another woman said that she has not yet found any photo of her husband, who has been unaccounted for since the disaster. The woman said it's very painful that all houses in her neighborhood are gone. The display will continue through Tuesday.
